I’ll See You On The Other Side

I'll See You on the Other Side is a dynamic art installation, featuring 42 porcelain-plaster face masks representing migrants who were stranded in Calais, France, or Tangier, Morocco, at the time of the artwork's creation. This installation shines a light on the perilous journey that many migrants undertake in search of a better life. While some succeed in reaching their desired destinations, others fall short or disappear along the way. Each face mask was crafted on-site in Calais and Tangier, and the participants represented 17 different nationalities.

The project began in March 2022 and spanned the following six months, a period when the sea is relatively more forgiving for crossings. During this time, the individuals depicted in the face masks made attempts to cross either the North Sea or the Mediterranean to reach the United Kingdom or the European Union. Boccanegra periodically updated the status of each participant, using different colors to indicate their progress.

Cream = This person has safely arrived in England or in the European Union.

Grey = No change in status, this person is still stuck in Calais or Tangier.

Black = Contact with this person has been lost, for whatever reason. (Going dark is military lingo for the sudden termination of communication.)

The project concluded in September 2022, with the outcome for the 42 participants as follows: 9 successfully reached their destinations, 25 were still stuck, and contact was lost with 8 individuals.
